Visit to Buchenwald (by Oisin Desmond)

Posted on Friday 9 March 2007

It was a very nice day when we went to visit Buchenwald. The busride lasted about 15 minutes and took us along small roads, surrounded by trees. The first thing I noticed when we finally arrived was the nature: the trees, the grass,… It’s on a hill so you have a panoramic view on the villages below and the sky up above. To think that in this beautiful place such awful things took place, is beyond my imagination. Once you enter the camp , you notice the contrast with outside. It is a big, empty, grey space. Only a few buildings and the ruins of the barracks still stand. For me, it was mainly a place for thought and imagining what happened there. It was a very interesting, harrowing experience but I’m happy I got the chance to go.
